The food insecurity rates for Miami-Dade residents exceed the national rates with 15.3% of residents being food insecure and 26% of households with children being food insecure, higher than the 20% national average. (Feedingamerica.org)
Cooking Matters classes help these food insecure children and families in Miami shop for and prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget.
FLIPANY is the lead Florida partner of the Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters® programs and has served 935 youth, teens and parents last year alone, connecting families with food. Chef and nutrition instructors lead hands-on courses that teach adults, teens and youth how to purchase and prepare nutritious foods in healthful, safe and tasty ways.
FLIPANY has a unique opportunity in Miami-Dade County. There are approximately 22 afterschool sites in disadvantaged neighborhoods that are on our waiting list to receive Cooking Matters nutrition education programs. 500 children and parents will benefit from learning these skills.
A family foundation has generously offered to match ($1 for $1) all donations from now until October 30th, 2014 up to $25,000.
