Food Day 2012- A Huge Success!

Food Day 2012 was a huge success!

FLIPANY participated in two events this past Wednesday for Food Day, one in Broward and one in Palm Beach and had a great turn out at both!  The day started out with a panel discussion on healthy, affordable and sustainable food.  Then the audience was treated to a healthy eating and cooking demo by FLIPANY to teach them how to prepare fresh and nutritious meals at a low cost!

In Palm Beach, FLIPANY’s volunteer chef Michelle Tittle and Jose Samour did the demo.    Chef Carlos Jorge, the executive chef of the W Ft. Lauderdale Hotel, volunteered to prepare the food for the group in Broward.  Both chefs prepared a recipe from the Cooking Matters in your Community toolkit from Share our StrengthBarley Jambalaya , a healthy and affordable recipe that you can prepare for yourself at home!

Chef Carlos is no stranger to FLIPANY.  Beyond just volunteering for the organization, he hosted this years Chefs Up Front dinner and silent auction, a fundraiser benefitting the Share our Strength’s Cooking Matters™ program, ran locally by FLIPANY to teach kids and families to cook healthy meals on a budget.  His dedication to promoting healthy eating and wellness to underprivileged children is clear and FLIPANY was glad to work with this great chef again.  Chef Carlos says, “I’ve seen first-hand the difference this program makes in the lives of underprivileged children and families here in South Florida. I have two beautiful daughters and put myself in the place of a parent who may not be a fortunate as I.”

Food Day is an entire day dedicated to the overall mission of FLIPANY, to promote the importance of healthy, nutritious, and AFFORDABLE food to families all over the country.  For one day, people all over the country are reminded of the important benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle and are shown how do to that on the smallest of budgets.  It’s baby steps like these that move FLIPANY closer to their goal of ending childhood obesity.
