You are what you eat…and possibly what your parents, teachers and friends eat!
Role modeling is a simple concept that dives deep into the world of sociology. Role modeling is defined as: a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people.
The nutrition educators, Registered Dietitians and physical activity educators at FLIPANY are working with the TOUCH initiative to encourage role modeling in the classrooms to promote healthy behaviors that last a lifetime.
Teachers are encouraged:
– To have family style meals and sit with the children during meal times.
– To examine what they are eating and consider incorporating healthy choices and more physical activity during classroom time.
– Use non-food items, not candy or dessert for parties or rewards.
– Incorporate healthy messages into the lesson plans
– Drink water in front of their students.
– Participate in physical activity or movement activities with children.
Parents are encouraged:
– To not skip meals- especially breakfast.
– Enjoy meals together as a family.
– Help plan meals together.
– Drink water and low fat milk in front of your children.
– Use non-food items for rewards.
– Cook together and talk about cooking.
– Talk positively about healthy choices and not be afraid of trying new foods.
By role modeling adults can influence a healthy atmosphere. Research shows that parents and schools can both play an important role in the eating habits of children. When adult role models eat lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables and drink low fat milk and water they are sending healthy messages to a child that will last a lifetime.
